How to Become a Laser Technician in the UK

Quick answer: To become a laser technician in the UK, you first need a relevant Level 3 qualification, such as beauty therapy or the VTCT Level 3 Access to Aesthetic Therapies. Then you take a Level 4 laser and IPL qualification, get insurance and check your council's licensing rules. Laser tattoo removal is a further Level 5 step.

Last reviewed 18 Oct 2026.

Step 1: a relevant Level 3

Level 4 laser needs a relevant Level 3 or equivalent; admissions check what you hold. Medics can enrol. If you do not yet hold a Level 3, start with the VTCT Level 3 Access to Aesthetic Therapies: no experience needed, with 3 practical days. See the Pathway to Aesthetics for how Level 3 sits before Level 4 skin and laser.

Step 2: the VTCT Level 4 Certificate in Laser and IPL

The regulated route is the VTCT Skills Level 4 Certificate in Laser and IPL Treatments (AB40163, QAN 500/9034/3), an Ofqual-regulated qualification. It covers hair removal and skin photo-rejuvenation; both units are mandatory. You complete 3 practical days plus 20 hours of online theory. Theory exams are taken remotely online. Models are supplied. Devices listed on the course page include 3D Trilogy Ice, Cosmeditech and XL Aesthetics. For the current fee, see the Level 4 laser hair removal course page or course prices.

Core of Knowledge: do you need it?

Core of Knowledge is not needed to enrol on Level 4 and is not included in the Level 4 fee. It is an online VTCT iTEC Level 4 award covering laser and light safety and controlled area awareness, better suited to a laser safety officer role. See the Core of Knowledge course page for the current fee.

Insurance and your local licence

Licensing depends on the council. For example, the London Borough of Bromley requires a special treatments licence for lasers plus therapist registration. Check aesthetics licensing in London and Kent for fees and other councils. The national licensing scheme for non-surgical cosmetic procedures is not in force, and the government has said a further consultation will cover training standards and qualifications.

Where laser technicians work

Laser technicians work in salons, laser clinics or their own business, offering laser and IPL hair removal and photo-rejuvenation, subject to insurance and local licensing.

Step 3 (optional): Level 5 laser tattoo removal

The next step is the VTCT Skills Level 5 Certificate in Laser Tattoo Removal (QAN 603/2907/5). It needs Level 4 laser and IPL. Delivery includes 1 online webinar day, 3 practical days on live models and 1 end point assessment day, in a class of no more than 6, on the XL Tri Star. See the Level 5 laser tattoo removal course for dates and the current fee.

Already working in laser?

If you already hold evidence from laser practice, ask about our RPL routes for Level 4 laser and Level 5 laser tattoo removal. RPL is assessed case by case.
