Laser Hair Removal Courses for Beginners: Where to Start in the UK

New to laser? Start with a Level 3, then VTCT Level 4 Laser and IPL (3 practical days, 20 online theory hours), then Level 5 tattoo removal.

Published: 17 October 2026Reviewed: 17 October 20264 min readBy Cosmetic College Editorial Team

You cannot start Level 4 laser as a complete beginner. VTCT asks for a relevant Level 3 first, such as our Level 3 Access to Aesthetic Therapies (no beauty qualification needed, £1,980.00). Then take the VTCT Level 4 Certificate in Laser and IPL: 3 practical days, 20 hours of online theory, £1,500.00 inc VAT. Level 5 tattoo removal can follow.

Can a complete beginner train in laser?

Yes, but not straight onto Level 4. VTCT requires a relevant Level 3 (or equivalent) before the Level 4 Certificate in Laser and IPL. Admissions confirms what existing certificates count. If you have no beauty qualification, start with Level 3 Access, then move to Level 4 laser. To compare the full laser menu later, see our laser training courses.

Step 1: get a Level 3

The Level 3 Access to Aesthetics course needs no beauty qualification. Delivery includes 1 remote lecture plus 3 practical days. The fee is £1,980.00. The site states it as the entry route to Level 4 skin and laser for people without a beauty qualification.

If you also want skin treatments and Level 7 injectables later, review the Pathway to Aesthetics package alongside standalone Level 3 enrolment.

Step 2: VTCT Level 4 Laser and IPL

After a relevant Level 3, take the VTCT Level 4 laser hair removal course. At Cosmetic College it includes 3 practical days, 20 hours of online theory, a class of 6 and models supplied, for £1,500.00 inc VAT. Theory exams are remote online exams. For the full syllabus, machines and dates, use the course page rather than this beginners summary. For more detail on coverage, read what VTCT Level 4 laser covers.

Optional: Core of Knowledge

Core of Knowledge online course is a separate VTCT iTEC Level 4 award. It is not included in the Level 4 laser practical fee. The online fee is the current course fee. It covers laser and light safety and controlled area awareness. Some employers or insurers may ask for it; treat it as optional unless your employer or insurer requires it.

Step 3: Level 5 laser tattoo removal

Beginners do not jump straight into tattoo removal. After Level 4 laser, you can take the Level 5 laser tattoo removal course for Level 4 laser therapists. The fee is £2,220.00. Honest route for tattoo removal from zero: Level 3, then Level 4 laser, then Level 5. See the laser tattoo removal training guide for what Level 5 involves.

What it costs from zero

StageCourseFee
1Level 3 Access to Aesthetic Therapies£1,980.00
2Level 4 Laser and IPL£1,500.00
3 (optional)Core of Knowledge (online)the current course fee
4 (after Level 4)Level 5 laser tattoo removal£2,220.00

Level 3 plus Level 4 at current fees: £3,480.00. Adding Level 5: £5,700.00. Core of Knowledge is extra if you choose it.

In-house 0% payment plans need a £3,000 minimum spend. Klarna or Snap may be available below that, as shown on course pages. For price context across the market, see laser hair removal course prices.

After you qualify: licensing, insurance, first clients

Licensing depends on your council. For example, the London Borough of Bromley requires a special treatments licence for lasers (new £706, renewal £354) plus therapist registration. Check the Bromley special treatments licence pages for current rules. Other councils set their own fees and processes.

Arrange insurance before treating paying clients. Use insurance for VTCT treatments as a starting checklist, then build supervised experience and a simple client pipeline.
