VTCT vs CPD Aesthetics Courses

Quick answer: VTCT courses lead to Ofqual-regulated qualifications at a set level with formal assessment; CPD courses build skills in a specific treatment and give a CPD certificate, which is not an Ofqual-regulated qualification. Many practitioners use both.

When a VTCT qualification makes sense

Career changers building a recognised route often start with VTCT Level 3 Access and progress through skin to Level 7. See the Pathway to Aesthetics and all VTCT courses. For a definition of regulation and levels, read what a VTCT qualification is.

When a CPD course makes sense

CPD courses on this site are described as CPD-accredited. They suit practitioners adding one treatment they are already eligible for, with shorter practical courses and e-learning first. Groups of 4 are stated on CPD course pages such as microneedling. Browse aesthetics courses for options that match your entry rules.

What the licensing changes may mean

The Health and Care Act 2022, section 180, gave powers to set up a licensing scheme. The government's August 2025 consultation response committed to CQC regulation for the highest-risk procedures, local-authority licensing of practitioners and premises for lower-risk procedures, and age limits. A further consultation will cover education, training standards, qualifications, infection control and insurance. The scheme is not in force and has no start date. No official source sets a required qualification level. See aesthetics licensing in London and Kent.

  • Ofqual regulates qualifications and awarding organisations, not training providers.
  • VTCT and CPD do different jobs; many practitioners use both.
  • The national licence is not final and has no set qualification level yet.
